Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) is a volunteer based program of the Albany Damien Center that helps improve the quality of life for persons with HIV/AIDS by helping them to keep the love and companionship of their pets – and - by providing information on the benefits and risks of animal companionship.

This list is meant to be a helpful guide to situations that might arise.  If you have any questions about the proper course of action, please telephone the office at 518-944-3223

 

 What services we do and do not offer:

  

WE DO:

 

þ     Help people with HIV/AIDS in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, and Saratoga counties enjoy and care for their companion animals.

þ     Offer in home care for pets when client is ill or hospitalized.  This does not include pet sitting during vacations.

þ     Offer volunteer assistance and transportation to our clients when needed and available.

þ     Assist with veterinary care. 

þ     Provide supplemental pet food and supplies to our clients’ companion animals.

þ     Staff information tables at street fairs and other venues.

þ     Actively engage in outreach to educate the HIV community and introduce potential clients to our services.

 

WE DO NOT:

 

x    Provide services for someone with HIV/AIDS who is not a registered client of PAWS.

x    Provide services to persons living with HIV/AIDS who reside outside the four county region (Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Saratoga)

x    Pay for spaying or neutering.

x    Have a program to take animals to visit people in hospitals.

x    Give animals to people with HIV/AIDS.

x    Help find homes for companion animals.

x    Automatically pay vet bills for every client.

x    Find homes for litters born to clients' companion animals.

x    Function as part of the SPCA or any other group (although we maintain open communication with many animal, healthcare and AIDS organizations)
